Battle Finale
Red reaches the finale of the Battle Royale dueling contest.
Chapter 24
"What goes around comes around and the folks of Brimstone have turned a blind eye for too long."
Sheriff Bartlett is on his balcony again, flanked by Governor Griffon and Jason Cornet, announcing the Battle Royale.
"For our semi-final round, we have a three time winner and current champion, the sharpest shooter and dresser in the whole territory, Mister Kelley!"
"The brave soul challenging him is a man who's killed a lot of bad men around here and is looking to kill some more... Red!"
As he names Red, the door behind him opens and he's dragged into the room by a man. Immediately, Governor Griffon takes over the running of the Battle Royale.
"Due to the sudden absence of Sheriff Bartlett, I'm going to be stepping in to oversee this uh, conclusion to the Battle Royale" explains Griffon.
"Now whereas the two gentlemen before us are clearly the best, I believe a change of the rules is in order. I hereby disqualify Jack Swift and Annie Stoakes. The winner of this here round is going to be the winner of the Battle Royale."
You must successfully pass at least 3 of these 4 targets.
- Accuracy: 60%
- Damage Taken: 30%
- Time: 4:00
- Best Combo: $200
You'll usually receive more than 30% damage during the duel meaning the "Damage Taken" objective is not possible. As a result, you'll need to complete the other 3 targets in order to receive an excellent rating in this mission.
You're now in a duel against the reigning champion Mr. Kelley. This is probably the toughest duel you'll face in the game, but thankfully if you fail, you can replay it over and over until you figure out the best technique.
As discussed in the previous level, my preferred technique for the duel is as follows:
- Hold down on the right analog stick throughout the cutscene
- As soon as the duel itself begins and you see Red's hand move down to its lowest point, flick the right stick forward to draw your gun
- Try to paint 2 or 3 red targets on Mr. Kelley as quickly as you can. If it's possible to get a headshot, go for it.
- As soon as you've got a couple of red targets painted, either mash the R1 button to fill out the remainder of your 6 targets, or press R2 to end the slow motion and fire off your shots.
You won't have enough time to carefully place 6 targets on Kelley as he'll open fire long before you get a chance. You need to get as many targets on him as quickly as you can, then fire off your shots before he can. Pressing R2 to end the slow mo will allow you to shoot before you've set all 6 targets which is almost a requirement to be faster to the draw.
If you don't hit him with some good shots, it's likely that he'll survive and then kill you when he returns fire. Ideally you want one in the upper chest and one in the head, but three decent shots to his body should do the job too.
Like I said, you'll probably fail this a lot of times. Some people may feel it's impossible, but with every attempt, try something new and try to perfect the skill. Remember you're not going to get 6 shots off before he gets one, so quickly mark a couple of targets and fire!
Even if you manage to shoot him quickly, there's about a 99% chance he still fires off one shot which will take out around half of your health. It is possible to time it so well that you successfully shoot him and take no damage at all, but the timing has to be absolutely perfect. Feel free to keep restarting the level if you want to try it.
Upon shooting Mr. Kelley, he collapses to the ground.
Suddenly, Governor Griffon pulls out a revolver and points it towards Red.
"Well, Red, you're good, I'll give you that, but of course you'd have to be to live through what you did".
During this rant, Red focuses on the unique pistol in Griffon's hand.
"Still, I'm afraid that we're going to have to end right here and now what we should have ended so many years ago."
Red then has a flashback to when he was a young boy in Chapter 1 and his father, Nate, explained that there were only two identical revolvers.
"Isn't she a beaut?" exclaims Nate.
"Yeah! Can I hold it?" asks Red.
"She's one of a pair. Only 2 in the whole world" said Nate.
"Where's the other one?" asks Red...
Flash forward to the present and Red has realised that Governor Griffon was his father's partner who betrayed him.
"Mr. Kelley, please join me at the mansion when you've finally taken care of business" asks Griffon.
Mr. Kelley is now sitting up on the ground, not as dead as he appeared earlier, then climbs to his feet and faces off with Red again.
As soon as you're back in control of Red, you'll be in a regular gun fight with Mr. Kelley. He starts off with around a third of his health bar depleted because of the duel, but he's certainly not quite dead yet.
A bunch of citizens will run around the streets, so you need to be somewhat careful about shooting them in the commotion.
Charge over towards Mr. Kelley and reload your gun which might be empty from the duel. As he gets back to his feet, he'll go on a rampage and start shooting the townsfolk. If he kills too many of them you'll fail the mission.
Use Deadeye to ensure you target him, but be aware he'll try to make a break from you and escape. If he does you'll need to hunt him down as he runs around killing everyone, so try not to let him out of your sight.
While he's distracted with shooting the Brimstone citizens, you can take the opportunity to pop some more rounds into his face. If you're trying to get an excellent rating, unless you managed to avoid being hit with perfect timing in the duel, you're probably only going to have 3 possible targets to reach, so you'll need to get a $200 combo. The best way to do this is by shooting and killing 2 or 3 of the townsfolk while you also hunt down Mr. Kelley.
Firing shots at the people will count towards your combo, but don't kill more than 3 or you'll fail the mission. Combine some "accidental" kills with shots on Kelley and you should be able to build your combo multiplier high enough to pass $200. Those extra shots will also boost your accuracy.
Keep firing away at Mr. Kelley's head and try to stay close to him to protect the townsfolk, and you should be able to take him down eventually.
"Well, I guess I just lost my chance at five thousand in gold" says a disappointed Jack Swift as Annie arrives on the scene. "A small price to pay to avoid shooting you, madam" he continues.
"Jack Swift, you're just lucky to be alive" responds Annie before spotting the Sheriff stumbling out of the nearby building.
"Sheriff? Are you alright?" asks Annie.
"I'm alright!" he responds, still holding his head.
Wasting no time, Red approaches the Sheriff and forcibly asks "Tell me where to find him".
"His mansion! But it's secured like a fortress" says Sheriff Bartlett, pointing in the direction of Griffon's mansion.
Red begins to walk away as the Sheriff calls out "It'll be hard even for a Bounty Hunter like you. He will not be alone".
"He ain't the only one that wants the governor. I reckon that there prize money is in that mansion of his" explains Annie while Jack Swift follows Red along the street, closely followed by Annie herself.

Tips
The Golden Gun and Invincibility cheats are very useful for this one. Remember to choose the Scorpion revolver at the start of the mission as it's the most powerful gun in the game.
First of all, you'll have to win the duel. I personally find skipping the cutscene then immediately flicking the right stick down and back up will allow you to draw your gun first. With Golden Gun, and using the Scorpion, you should deal more damage in the duel so you'll only need to hit him a few times, but try to blast away when you see the crosshair go red. Once you've got a couple of red X's on him, just mash the R1 button to fire off the rest of the shots because you want to empty the gun before he has a chance to shoot back.
After the duel he'll get up and run away and your 1 minute countdown timer will be displayed on the screen. As soon as the cutscene is over, you should be running straight towards him as soon as you can. Although you don't have Infinite Deadeye yet, you'll still have Deadeye you can use, so lock onto him and blast away. Assuming you got pretty close, most of your shots should hit him and with Golden Gun enabled, that'll probably be enough to take him down in about 10 seconds.
All Bounty Hunter challenges are much easier if you unlock and enable the "Invincibility", "Infinite Deadeye" and "Golden Gun" cheats. For more info, read about Cheats in Red Dead Revolver.
