Jailbreak
Red acquires a number of keys in order to escape the prison inside Bear Mountain Mine.
Chapter 16
"About the only thing worse than being stuck in jail is being stuck in jail in a mine."
We're back in control of Red.
"It's been a week since General Diego captured me. I don't know nothing about bounty hunting, but I've been a slave once and ain't never going to do it again" explains Buffalo Soldier as he talks to red inside the prison cell they're locked in.
Shadow Wolf shows up outside and spots him, calling out "Cousin Red?".
"Shadow wolf?" responds Red as he rushes to the door.
"I knew I'd find you! The blood bond between us is strong" says Shadow Wolf as he opens the door, unlocking the cell.
Buffalo Soldier walks out too, telling Red "I'll go to Brimstone. I'll have the Cavalry here in no time!".
"Go fast, Soldier" encourages Shadow Wolf. "Unless we separate we'll have no chance for escape" he tells Red. "I will go this way and meet you at Diego's fort" before climbing over the fence and disappearing.
Not applicable for this mission.
As soon as you take control of Red, the game explains how to crouch, telling you to "Push in on the left analog stick to go into a crouch". Before you go anywhere or do anything though, there's a secret shop right at the start of this level.
Turn around and go back into the cell you just escaped from and you'll see a skeleton. If you approach it, you can press Square to talk which will open up a secret shop with two items to purchase. They can both only be purchased right here, so once you leave the area they're locked until you reach this point in another playthrough.
Turn around, right at the start of the level, and talk to the skeleton inside the prison cell.
- Horseshoe - $1050
- Snake Oil - $400
Continue along the path and head towards the mine entrance.
As you reach the tunnel, a minor cutscene will kick in.
Red takes cover against a rock and pulls out a knife. The camera moves around the corner to show an enemy coming towards his position from inside the mine.
You can exit cover and head into the mine tunnels. If you crouch down, the game will explain "Movement while crouched makes less noise. Use it to slip past the enemy undetected".
Stealth is encouraged throughout this level as the enemies are not aware of you until you've been spotted. It doesn't matter if you do get seen though, you'll just have to shoot them all.
If you want to stay stealthy, remain crouched and throw knives at the enemies to take them out silently.
In order to escape from your current area, you need to collect a key which can be found in a room to the left of where you entered the tunnel. There'll be an enemy inside, usually sitting at a desk, so throw a knife at him to take him out then you'll find the key next to a table to the left.
It glows every few seconds so if you can't find it, stand still and it should highlight itself for you.
Once you've picked up the key, you need to head back out of the room, then keep left and follow the tunnel along and to the left. There may be another enemy standing near the door, so throw a knife to take him out then press Square to use the key to unlock the door. You don't need to eliminate the enemies, you simply need to acquire the key and get through the door.
It doesn't matter if you got spotted or not, on the other side of the door, you're now inside the main tunnels of the mine and the enemies won't be aware of you.
In order to escape, you need to reach the "Lounge" which is straight ahead of where you enter, at the other side of the mine core. If you pause the game you can view the Map.
In order to get into the lounge, you'll need a key, but getting it will require a bit of back and forth exploration as you acquire other keys to unlock the doors on the way.
Stay crouched and make your way past a sleeping guard to the right, or take him out by throwing a knife.
Continue to the right and head up a small wooden bridge.
Follow the path around to the right, and if you haven't been spotted yet, a cutscene will usually kick in.
Red looks around the corner as a big guard is asleep against the wall, under a sign labelled "Jail". A smaller guard approaches him and wakes him up.
After the cutscene, you need to acquire the jail room key by killing the big enemy. You can stay in cover and wait for them to separate so you can stealthily take him out, or just pop out and blast away with your guns. Making a scene will alert all of the other guards, however, so you'll be in combat for the majority of the mission from this point.
However you kill the big guard, pick up his key then approach the jail door and press Square to enter.
Inside you'll see a woman trapped in the jail cell. You can talk to her if you approach and press Square. There's a key you can collect in the middle of the room which can be used to unlock the storage room door.
If you talk to the woman, a small cutscene plays.
Unfortunately her cell requires another key that you don't have yet.
Make sure you collect the store room key from the center of her room then you'll need to make your way to the opposite end of the mine to where you are now. The store room is located on a slightly lower level around the other side of the core.
Press square next to the door to head back into the mine tunnels.
If you made a scene getting into the jail, there are likely enemies waiting outside and you'll have a welcoming party waiting at the other end of the wooden bridge.
Take them out as you go, and make your way all of the way around the core of the mine to the other side. You'll pass a tunnel that leads to where you entered the mine if you go to the left, or you'll see the lounge if you go to the right, but ignore them and continue all of the way to the other side.
There may be another big enemy guarding the door, and if you kill him, he'll drop another key which you can use for the jail room, but you've already been there so collecting it won't make any difference.
Visit the door labelled "Supplies" and press Square to enter. Inside you'll find another key to the right side of the room. This can be used to open the jail cell where the woman is trapped.
Leave the supply room, then head back to the opposite side of the mine again and revisit the jail room. You can use your latest key to unlock the cell, which will give you access to the final key which is used to visit the lounge.
After opening the cell, remember to talk to the woman.
"Thanks! Maybe you can use this key that one of the guards left behind. I think it opens the door that leads up to the fort" she explains.
Talk to her again one more time and this time she'll provide a 'secret shop' with a permanent health increase.
After unlocking the cell where the woman is imprisoned, speak to her twice and she'll offer you 1 item to purchase.
- Kiss - $1
- Increases Max Health
Ensure you grab the key from inside the cell, then make your way to the lounge, which you may have passed earlier. From the bottom of the wooden bridge, turn right and follow the tunnels around. It's quite likely that there will be a number of enemies in the tunnels now so you might have to fight your way there. There's no excellent rating for this level, so it doesn't matter how much damage you take, or your accuracy, so just spray as many bullets as it takes to wipe everyone out.
Once you approach the lounge doorway, you'll be taken inside automatically and a cutscene will kick in.
Red kicks in the door as three guards jump to their feet.
"Finally. We just been killing time since Mr. Kelley made us guard this hole in the ground, but it looks like things are picking up. That's bad luck for you, stranger" says the main guy, known as The Duellist in the Journal, but named as Sergio very soon...
You're now in another triple-threat duel with Sergio, Ennio and Eli.
I'm not even sure it's possible to kill the three of them in the duel as they open fire almost immediately.
Red will likely be shot and fall down as if he's dead, but he'll jump back to his feet and the rest of the battle will continue as a normal shootout.
The three enemies have fairly small health bars, so a couple of headshots each will put them down, but bear in mind your health is quite low too. Use Deadeye if you have it, otherwise just keep blasting away.
If you're killed at this point, you'll continue from a checkpoint in the storage room, then you'll need to re-acquire the key from the jail cell and head back to the lounge to try again.
As soon as the three of them are dead, the mission will end and you'll move onto the next chapter...
There are no rewards for completing this mission as it rolls onto the next mission automatically.
This mission is not available in Bounty Hunter Mode.
