Carnival Life
Red rescues an Englishman called Jack Swift before battling Pig Josh.
Chapter 6
"This abandoned Army outpost has been used as a stopping point for many a traveler, until Professor Perry and his cursed Carnival showed up."
Before the mission starts, you'll be given the option to purchase the following items.
- Dynamite - $220
- Breech Loader - $220
- Revolver - $100
Red walks into the Fairgrounds and a man (Jack Swift) calls out from above. "Excuse me, excuse me, sir".
"I seem to have found myself in a most unfortunate situation" continues Jack, who is trapped in a cage, high above the ground. "If you would be kind enough to help me" he asks while a number of enemies, including small guys dressed as clowns scurry about the area.
"You ain't my problem" interrupts Red as he keeps on walking. "Indeed sir, however, you might feel differently once you look behind you" explains Jack, where enemies are getting into position to attack.
You must successfully pass at least 3 of these 4 targets.
- Accuracy: 66%
- Damage Taken: 200%
- Time: 8:00
- Best Combo: $200
Once the level starts, you're in control of Red who is starting to be surrounded. There are numerous enemies all around the area. You'll see lots of little clowns who run around and open fire at you, or hit you with their weapons if they get close enough. Thankfully they die fairly easily, but they're difficult to see so you'll need to pay attention for any that sneak up on you.
There's a gunman in the large windmill tower who you'll need to be aware of. These guys will take a lot more damage to their body than the clowns, but a single headshot is usually good enough to take them down.
Keep moving and shooting all of the enemies who appear. You'll also want to pay particular attention to the hill with the mounted gattling gun. If you clear that out, you can use the gun by pressing the Square button. If you hold L1 while using the gun, it will slow down your movement so you can aim it a little bit more easily.
Keep fighting until the first batch of enemies are cleared. There are roughly 10 you'll need to dispose of. If you haven't freed him already, the game will then drop hints that Jack Swift is still stuck in his cage.
You can free him by shooting the red handle on the outside of the cage.
You can actually do this at any point throughout the firefight, including right at the start. If you free him immediately, he'll help you take down the enemies, but he's not much use so you'll end up killing everyone yourself anyway.
Once you've freed Jack and killed all of the enemies, a cutscene will kick in.
"I'm guessing there's more where they came from. That contraption should make short work of them. I'll cover you" suggest Jack while looking towards the gattling gun on the hilltop.
As Red head up the hill to check out the machine gun, the camera cuts to some carnival cars which open up, spilling a bunch more enemies into the area.
Once the action starts again, you're next to the gattling gun at the top of the hill. Press Square to take control of it and you can use it to fire away. It'll eliminate enemies much quicker than your pistol or rifle, but it does spray out bullets quickly and the ammo isn't unlimited.
Staying near the gun is a good location as you take out the 15 or so enemies who are now scattered around the area. Jack will open fire which is usually an indication as to where the enemies are. You'll probably struggle to see all of the clowns as they're quite small and will usually hide behind cover so as you decrease their numbers, you might need to go looking for them.
By now you should have experience of fire fights in the game so stay behind cover and fire away until they're all dead. Occasionally the enemies will drop health bottles which you can run around and collect if you need it. Don't worry about Jack, he can't die.
The camera shows another of the circus cars which opens up to show Pig Josh with dynamite strapped to his head and chest. He's also carrying two large pieces of metal which he uses for protection.
"You're going to blow up real good, cowboy!" he says as he exits the car and climbs the hill towards Jack and Red.
You're now in a boss fight with Pig Josh and his health bar is quite substantial. This is actually quite a difficult fight until you know how to get through it. I died a lot on my first playthrough, so don't get disheartened.
If Pig Josh sees you near him, he'll chase after you. Once he reaches you, he'll blow himself up which can cause huge damage to your health. He, of course, isn't affected by this due to the metal shields he's carrying around with him, although he will be knocked to the floor.
If you dodge-roll just as Josh detonates his TNT (you need to be aiming your gun, then press X to roll in a direction), you'll actually be immune from damage. If you time it right, you can let Josh charge at you, blow up as you roll, then you can fire off quite a few shots into his feet and body while he gets back up.
This is pretty slow going however, as he won't take a lot of damage from feet shots. Ideally you want to be shooting him in the head.
An alternative technique which should be your primary focus is to lose him. If he spots you, run through the buildings and try to get away from him, then press L3 to crouch down and sneak around. If he doesn't know where you are, he leaves himself open to being shot in the back where he has no protection.
If you're able to hide somewhere you can see him, such as on top of the hill near the gattling gun, you can use your rifle and zoom in to shoot him in the back when he's walking away from you, or ideally the back of the head. Hitting him in the back will stun him. The game explains "You got him good that time! Pig Josh is stunned!" and you'll be able to fire off a few more headshots before he recovers. Rifle headshots will take out much more of his health bar than shooting his feet when he's on the floor. In fact you should be able to take out about one third of his health each time, so 2-3 attacks should be enough.
Once you've shot at him he'll know where you are so you'll need to make a run for it and try to hide somewhere else. You could combine the two techniques above and lure him in, dodge his explosion, then run and hide while he's on the floor.
One other potential solution is that Josh can't damage you with his explosions when you're on the very top of the roof on the middle building. If you head up the stairs inside, then jump and grab the small cabin on the roof to climb on top of it, Josh may be able to see you and will charge at you, but the explosion won't cause any damage. Unfortunately he'll usually end up inside the building below you, making him quite difficult to shoot, however if you've got time to kill, you can stay up there in safety and shoot at him whenever you get the chance.
If you die, you'll restart from the boss fight, so you don't need to worry about redoing the whole level again. Eventually you'll get the hang of it, but shooting him in the back is definitely the primary technique you should look to use if you want to get him out of there quickly.
Once Pig Josh is dead, Red will meet up with Jack Swift again.
"Thank you sir, your help has been immensely appreciated. If I can be of any assistance whatsoever, do not hesitate to call on me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a certain debt to collect from Professor Perry and his circus crew. Good day to you" says Jack as the two men leave the Fairgrounds.

Tips
In order to get a large combo, you're actually best off disabling the "Golden Gun" cheat and also ensure you select the weakest weapon you have when you start the mission. You don't want to kill enemies in one shot, you want to shoot them multiple times to increase their value before you kill them.
If you have these cheats unlocked, enable Invincibility and Infinite Deadeye, then at the start of the mission when you're attacked by lots of enemies, just keep using Deadeye and target the enemies feet and hands. You'll probably be able to hit them 4 or 5 times before you kill them which will increase the combo value to $20 or $30. Continue to keep the streak going by shooting more enemies within a few seconds in their hands and feet and you'll end up with something like "$60x2". Find more enemies quickly and shoot them before the combo ends and you'll easily have enough to pass the $500 total. I think my combo ended up at something like $70x8 but it should be easily possible to get a lot more.
The game will tell you that you completed the challenge when your combo ends, although you'll still need to complete the mission and kill Pig Josh. Once you see the combo has been achieved, turn on Golden Gun again to make the boss fight quicker and easier.
If you don't get the combo during the first part of the mission, just restart the level from the pause menu because that's the best place to go for it.
All Bounty Hunter challenges are much easier if you unlock and enable the "Invincibility", "Infinite Deadeye" and "Golden Gun" cheats. For more info, read about Cheats in Red Dead Revolver.
