Obstacles in Our Path
Bonnie and John take part in a friendly horse race around MacFarlane's Ranch.
- Fastest Time: 3:05
Anything You Can Do...
John heads into Bonnie's house.
After spotting him, Bonnie says good morning and asks how his ribs are feeling.
"Fine. A little sore, but apart from a couple extra scars, it will be as nothing happened" he responds.
Bonnie tries to get John to spill the beans on how he knows Bill Williamson, but he manages to find numerous nice ways to avoid to telling her.
After explaining that he'd rather not discuss it, Bonnie gives the ultimate insult: calling him a city boy.
This leads to both thinking they could win a race against the other. Bonnie bets Marston that he can't ride. "I hate to take money from a lady, miss" he chirps back.
"Oh, you won't be. I'll race you right now" says Bonnie as she runs out of the front door.
Go Time
Bonnie runs straight over to her horse, so give chase.
You're told to "Mount your horse" which is marked with a blue blip, so approach it and press Triangle to climb on.
Follow Bonnie down the road to the start point in front of the barn.
Bonnie and Marston line up in preparation for the race as Bonnie explains "Alright, I'll show you how we ride around these parts. On the count of 3. 3, 2, 1. I trust you're not gonna be a gentleman about this!".
Down the road we see smoke rising from the ground which is used to mark the checkpoints for the race.
When Bonnie says "Go!" the race begins. Simply run from one smoke marker to the next. You'll be racing all around the ranch and finishing in front of the main house.
You'll be told that "Race waypoints are marked by plumes of smoke, and as yellow blips on your map". The game also instructs you to "Race Bonnie around the MacFarlane Ranch". Throughout the race, Bonnie will be marked as a blue blip on your radar so you can see how far ahead or behind she is.
Keep running running through the smokey checkpoints.
Don't go mental and mash the X button too fast though or your horse will run out of stamina. You need to keep a good rhythm going so the horse increases in speed while also allowing it time to recharge its stamina between button presses. One press after every 3 gallops is usually good enough to maintain a quick pace.
The game explains "When galloping, you can get a short burst of extra speed by tapping X. This will temporarily reduce your horse's stamina and if you spur too much, your horse may try to buck you off".
Don't just sprint around the whole course as there are some sharp corners, so you may want to hold R1 to slow down the horse when things look a bit tight.
The game also explains that "Your horse will run faster while on roads and horse trails", so try to stick to the paths.
You'll head through some tight winding paths beneath some trees, so be careful not to miss any of the turns.
Continue around the outskirts of Hennigan's Stead and the MacFarlane's Ranch then race back up the main road to the finish line just past the general store.
Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you win the race or not.
Bonnie and Marston both agree the race was fun.
Bonnie then suggests John visits the Marshal in Armadillo. "I'm sure he could help you deal with that nice Mr. Williamson".
"Yeah, I might just do that, Miss MacFarlane" replies John.
After the mission, John Marston is seen resting against a telegraph pole in front of Bonnie's house.
You're also reminded that "Marshal Johnson is available to talk to you in Armadillo. Travel to the 'M' icon on your map".
You now have the choice of 2 missions to take on next.
Gold Medal Tips
- Sprint to your horse and to the starting line.
- Best way to run on a horse is to tap sprint every 3 gallops. Stay on the roads and don't get bucked.
- Finish the race in first or right behind Bonnie. Don't worry, we'll only laugh a little at you for losing.
- The race is fairly easy. Even if you mess up in a few spots you should still be able to finish first. Beware of the fences and tight corners!
